David Sumpter
Professor of Applied Mathematics
Uppsala University
Sweden

David Sumpter’s research concerns understanding the organisation of biological systems through the application of mathematical modelling. The aim is to contribute to answering biological problems using novel and interesting mathematics. His has two main areas of research, the first being the organisation of insect societies, which shows that, in many cases, ants follow simple ‘rules of thumb’ and can be modelled mathematically as interacting particles. The second area is that of population dynamics in which a central problem of ecology, that of relating the interactions of individuals to the dynamics of the populations of these individuals, is addressed theoretically.
