The
interests of Hugh Cartwright's research group are broad, covering the application of Artificial Intelligence methods to problems across a range of scientific areas. Techniques such as Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, Data Mining and Cellular Automata have been used to study the movement of airborne pollution, the degradation of buried archaeological artefacts, the design of optimal synthetic routes in organic chemistry, the growth of bacterial colonies in studies of bioremediation, prediction of the intestinal absorption of AIDS drugs, optimisation of production timing in the chemical process industry, automatic control of industrial synthesis, the design of novel consumer fabric materials, minimisation of chemical waste generation during industry processes, and other areas. In addition, there is a continuing research program in co-operation with pharmaceutical companies on the use of AI in proteomics and, more broadly, in the field of bioinformatics in general.
